A Host Family Pushes Back on a Student's Medical Plan
Abstract
This case explores a cultural and ethical dilemma that arose during a short-term education abroad program for secondary school students. A host parent’s beliefs about medication and mental health conflicted with a student’s prescribed treatment for anxiety, leading to tension and eventual relocation. The situation highlights the complexities of supporting student well-being within culturally diverse homestays and raises questions about preparation, communication, and the balance between cultural respect and institutional duty of care.
